I've seen people throw around phrases like "the UAE using slave labor etc." and I think there's a lot that's overlooked when we talk about this issue so this thread will hopefully cover a few of those things in relation to the UAE postive action to fight against human trafficking
Therefore I have decided to spam you all with parts of research I've done surrounding this topic.
When we discuss human trafficking we have to understand that this is an issue that transcends borders..Trafficking often occurs from less developed countries to more developed countries, where people are rendered vulnerable to trafficking by virtue of poverty, conflict or other
so alot of times when people discuss issues of ill treatment of workers or people being trafficked this is an issue that's often times imported from the indviduals home country, with fake recruiters from their own . so what has the UAE done to combat this ?
In order to combat this the UAE has ratified nine major ILO conventions related to the rights of workers, and has adopted numerous laws to protect workers’ rights, including in the areas of recruitment, pay, housing and health.
Its also party to International Labor Organization (ILO), the Arab Labor Organization and other labor-focused multilateral organizations, the UAE seeks to work transparently and objectively with regard to its international labor obligations.
The country is also party to several human rights treaties. Internally The UAE inacted Federal Law 51 of 2006 and its the UAE’s primary anti-human trafficking legislation, formally prohibiting all forms of trafficking and prescribing penalties to those who break the law.
It was amended in 2015 to “emphasize the protection and repatriation of victims.”181 Among “victim-friendly amendments” are provisions to ensure that: authorities explain identified victims their rights in a language they understand; victims have access to medical care; and
victims can stay in the country while their investigations and trials go on, should they require victim cooperation.
Reporting on conviction rates under anti-trafficking or forced labor laws are extremely low in all GCC countries. The UAE ranks the highest in terms of reporting conviction.
Further the UAE hosts the Abu Dhabi Dialogue is a voluntary and non-binding inter-government consultative process, part of the established in 2008 as a forum for dialogue and cooperation between Asian countries of labour origin and destination, to openly talk about &resolve issue
Is there more work to be done to ensure to ensure better working conditions and protect labour rights? of course nobody's denying that. However I wanted to bring to light some of the efforts our country has taken work on this issue.
I think if we really want to talk about this topic, the questions we should be pondering is what more can be done to improve the situation?
