My concern is that if there is a second wave, the public will simply no longer comply with any new lockdown. The heady mix of summer, alcohol, and a taste of freedom means a lot of people won't care.

If the second wave comes, there will be a lot of deaths.
But the deaths won't come to those flouting any public health regulations. It'll be the most vulnerable, the elderly, patients recommended to shield.

The idea that we "coped" as a health service is a fallacy, we only barely did so by halting nearly all other non-COVID activities
I know many will disagree, but ultimately humans are selfish beings. Unless the danger threatens us at our doors, we are prone to acting selfishly. Even when it's our loved ones who'll be affected.

By the time they realise, it'll be too late.
