This. Same in Chicago. Everything was fine, then these people showed up and obliterated it. The people who came in and rioted were not the same as those holding/starting the event earlier, and it's horrific how they endangered people who didn't come with the intention to be. https://twitter.com/AGHamilton29/status/1266901458764664838
Also this is a consistent pattern in Chicago: peaceful events are overtaken by people from outside (many come from miles or even states away), turned violent, and the peaceful population--and Chicago as a whole--is then scapegoated as "violent." ...
... And then "Chicago Violence" is exploited for political points and upheld as an example for this policy or that. And who takes the blame? Not the non-minorities who came in to destroy property while their own property is safe miles away, but The [insert racial epithet here]s.
Then non-minorities face neverending increased scrutiny and racist clean-up/improvement policies aimed at "those of lower socioeconomic status" code for "Non-minority success and values, like the lack of consideration for others' property, are superior! How can we evolve you...
...to get you to 'our level'?" Non-minority children in particular become guinea pigs and pawns in the forced-assimilation-equals-civilization culture war the same people who torch cities are afraid of coming their way. G-D forbid someone pokes holes in totalitarian ideology.
If your ideology that supposedly lifts up the poor and minorities involves invading their spaces and using their events to cover your criminal behaviors, ask yourself why and if that's conducive to your alleged end-goal.
If your means of "keeping the peace" involves surveying people already engaged in peaceful activities, such as prayer (and observing a holiday, no less), while your city burns, ask yourself if those two things go together. --Why are you directing so many resources towards...
...people limited by a holiday, many of whom can't connect, coordinate, or communicate due to sacred restrictions of their autonomous community. And no, the pattern of persecution and pogroms on Jewish holidays is not lost on anyone. Stop it.
Do better, everyone.
Do better, everyone.
Great thread up and down on Chicago. https://twitter.com/byldonovan/status/1267187211218321412?s=19
