Last weekend, I cycled down the main street of Midleton, Co. Cork and as usual cars were parked in the opposite direction to that of the oncoming traffic. As I cycled a car proceeded to pull out into the oncoming traffic.
I was thankful that there was somebody in the passenger seat of the car as it gave me a sense of relief that someone may see me.The driver certainly wouldn't be able to see before I came became just another statistic.
I thought, how can I improve this, how can we improve this? How can we as a town progress...Midleton needs to be a beacon of progressive thinking. Cork City is currently lagging behind Dublin City's recent initiatives to create new cycling lanes!
I have devised the below layout to eliminate car parking on one side of Main St, Midleton and the idea would introduce a cycle lane that would link schools on one side to the train station, shopping centre and future greenway on the otherside!
Recent weeks have shown that plenty of people have and can use bikes, we just need to give them the environment on which they can feel safe to do so! Let us take a fractional percentage of parking space and give it back to the people!
Hopefully there are local councillors that feel/think the same . @cllr_twomey @LiamQuaide @SusanMcCarthyFG @M_Linehan_Foley #midleton #midletonnews @CorkCyclingCrew #corkcycling
