When I attended the F.B.I.’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar we were provided a tour of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. Our tour was led by a Dutch female survivor of the holocaust and her emphasis was on how local police enabled the Nazis. 1/n
The local police didn’t enable the Gestapo by being vocal supporters, but rather by being silently complicit in their actions. They stood by while the Gestapo carried out mass arrests and deportations to Nazi death camps. 2/N
No one stood up and said the actions of local police were wrong. They merely were doing their jobs as enforcers of the law. Very few police stood up and said the Gestapo was wrong. Instead they stood by and did nothing while fellow police offers helped the Gestapo. 3/N
As I watch replays of local police kicking women kneeling on the ground, knocking old men to the ground for not moving fast enough, shooting at neighbors sitting on their own porches for not going inside, and arresting members of the free press for doing their jobs...4/N
...I am reminded of that little old Dutch woman, who was but a child herself in 1944. She said, it was up to us, the F.B.I. and police executives attending that seminar to prevent local police from ever being used in this manner again. Yesterday, her warnings became reality. 5/5
