As a disabled woman, pro-choice activism is always hard for me. Anti-choicers stir up a lot of weird emotive language inspo porn to marketise their bigotry that doesn’t take into account my existence. When you challenge them, they’re usually quite vile. We’re not people - tokens.
They reduce it down to tag lines and brutal images devoid of reality. Having Domhnall was challenging physically and mentally from as soon as we found out and I have lots of associated trauma from being pregnant (as well as from healthcare). It consumes me near daily.
I chose to have Domhnall (although there were barriers for other options) but that doesn’t take away the struggle. We weren’t prepared to have a child, and I’m sure some of those pro-lifers would see me and my son as a drain when we were on UC.
Ireland is awful on disability rights as a whole. It’s inaccessible, there’s institutionalisation, poverty, unequal opportunities for jobs and education. The island needs to move towards actually embracing the UNCRPD and stop violating our rights. We need support and funding.
The pro-life lobby don’t care about funding any of that actually help us to live a dignified life, they just want to limit choice and deny pregnant people dignified healthcare.
It’s an all-island issue and can only be solved on an all-island basis. I’m republican because I want a better society than the one we have now and I will always strive for that. Every person deserves adequate healthcare and until that’s achieved, it’s an ongoing conversation.
