"i can't breathe" is the heartbreaking cry of black america that we have dismissed for decades. #BlackLivesMatter
in montgomery, alabama, @MemPeaceJustice commemorates the thousands of black americans who could not breathe because they were lynched by white americans inflamed by the ideology of our ruling regime.
last week, george floyd was murdered by the police. the police mocked him as he cried out for his mother and children.

the police knew they were being filmed. they knew there would be no serious consequences for their actions.

how could they be so sure?
this murder happened less than 10 miles from where philando castile was murdered by the police on video 4 years ago.

the officer that murdered philando castile was acquitted.
the 4 year old daughter of castile's partner in the back seat of his car just moments after he was murdered:

"mom, please stop saying cusses and screaming because i don't want you to get shooted" https://twitter.com/_SJPeace_/status/1266695195808186369
black americans are more likely to have asthma and much more likely to die from asthma than white americans. they can't breathe.

this health disparity can largely be explained by policies put in place by racist policies of past american governments. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22589306/
remarkably these protests are taking place almost exactly seven years after the gezi park protests.

the turkish regime used unprovoked police violence and state-controlled media to manufacture the belief that this peaceful protest was in fact a riot.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gezi_Park_protests
the authoritarian regime in turkey used this pretense to arrest their opponents and consolidate power in the subsequent election.

that's the playbook in america, too. https://twitter.com/bernybelvedere/status/1266904106964258817
don't fall for that shit.

police can choose to de-escalate protest violence.

newark did it.

sheriff chris swanson and his community in michigan did it. "i took my helmet off and laid the batons down" ... "march with us!" https://twitter.com/midmichigannow/status/1266907736735956996
finally, thank you to the black americans who are leading these protests and making information available on twitter. please listen to them and take action. #BlackLivesMatter
