Just because you’re not white doesn’t mean you don’t have anti-racist work to do. >>
Non-black POC still perpetuate colorism & may benefit from the model minority myth — subscribing to the notion that if you just work hard, you can succeed. This places the blame on black folks for their hardships & excuses the oppressor and oppressive systems.
Healing is a social justice issue. We cannot truly heal ourselves if we are not willing to address the covert and overt ways we (as individuals and in our own cultures) have contributed, and continue to contribute, to the suffering of our black brothers and sisters.
You are not automatically an ally because you’re brown. I implore you to address the anti-blackness in your own homes & community. You may never have personally appropriated black culture or said anything racist, but did you speak up when ppl around you did? If not, will you now?
You may have been taught to “maintain the peace” & keep quiet, but your silence is a privilege & indicates where you stand. If that doesn’t sit well with you, I encourage you to consider why, the emotions that come up, & who actually benefits from & who is harmed by your silence.
Start the work with yourself & consider your own implicit biases. How have the concepts of privilege, racism, & whiteness informed your own upbringing & what you’ve been taught? How do you benefit from the systems that create suffering for others? How can you help dismantle them?
Have important & difficult conversations with your families & in your own circles. Point out the racism. Speak up. Show up. Donate to causes helping right now. Listen to & pay black educators. Don’t burden black folks w/ your questions. Educate yourself! Don’t be complicit.
