In my hometown, there's a paved pedestrian and cyclist trail known as "the rail trail". It was originally a commuter line, but it switched to freight in the 60s and was deactivated in the 90s or 00s. We used to hang out on the empty tracks before it was paved several years ago.
Across from a stretch of the rail trail is a large strip mall, or "the Plaza". It houses one of the larger chain grocery stores in the region.
Sandwiched between the rail trail and the Plaza is a valley housing a creek, known colloquially as "the shopping cart graveyard". That was the destination of my walk today.
You know the meme, about returning the shopping cart or not? What if there were a third option: plunging it into the creek.
One adventurous ethicist even added a chair, repurposing the shopping carts as tables, to create a little hangout spot.
There are, of course, other strange things one can witness in the shopping cart graveyard and surrounding areas. But that's where I'll leave it for now. May their souls rest in one piece.
