There are very few players who have done very well in their final 2 years of test cricket and left on a high.

Most of the players have pretty poor years at the end and are forced to retire or are dropped.

When to stop playing? Is a question most great batsman can't answer
This is For batsman who retired with more than 4000 runs and at least played 10 inngs in their last two years....

Anyone scoring at least 4k test runs has to be have a decent test career up until then
Tendulkar avgd 30.93 in his last 2 years.

His career avg before that was 56.08.

That's a difference of (-25.16) in the avg

He just managed to score 835 runs in the last 28 inngs he played.

Can always argue he did not get the timing of his retirement right.
Ponting avgd 32.33 in his last 2 years.

His career avg before that was 54.72.

That's a difference of (-22.38) in the avg

He just managed to score 1067 runs in 34 inngs.

Again definitely did not get the timing of retirement right. He retired on a downward slope like Sachin.
Matthew Hayden :

Avgd 53.01 prior to his last 2 years

Avgd 36.92 in his last 2 years

Difference of (-16.09)

For someone who liked to impose himself and set the tone for Aus, avging mid 30s in his last 2 would have only led to self doubt.
Everton Weekes :

Avgd a mammoth 64.49 prior to his last 2 years.

Avgd only 38.24 in his last 2 years

A difference of (-26.26)

Classic case of trying to get things back on track and then getting stuck in a loop of constant failures eventually having to retire.
Jack hobbs :

Adam Gilchrist :

Avgd 50.18 prior to his last 2 years

Avgd 34.32 in his final 2 years

Difference of (-15.87)

Quite a big difference for someone like Gilchrist. Just shows how extraordinary he was as a wk batsman avging 50 for most of his career.
Micheal Clarke :

Avgd a brilliant 52.20 prior to his last 2 years

Avg fell down to 34.07 in the last 2 years

Retired after an away ashes loss.
Gary sobers :

Even though many players aren't able to do well at the later part of their careers, some players go the opposite direction and do exceeding well in their last 2 years, and even go beyond their career avgs
Andy flower :

Gary Kirsten :

A huge improvement in his last two years as a test cricketer.
Not hard to infer that your last 2 years in test cricket can be very challenging if you have had a very successful career till that point. Players often get stuck in loops for those last two years figuring out are they still good enough and eventually realizing the reality.
