Elected leaders cannot wring their hands about the tragedy of police brutality one minute, state their support of peaceful protest and reducing jail populations, and then use militarized police force against protestors the next. Thread:
Last night, @chicagosmayor trapped protestors downtown by lifting bridges and stopping the CTA, then instated a curfew that made everyone outside arrestable. https://twitter.com/SorenSpicknall/status/1266906263612526594
In New York, @NYCMayor defended a vehicular homicide attempt and states that the police have acted “appropriately” despite pepper spraying and macing entirely peaceful protestors and arresting journalists like my friend @KeithBoykin for no reason. https://twitter.com/arjunsethi81/status/1267115893974327297
In Atlanta, @KeishaBottoms allowed the APD to destroy individual privacy and attack people who were just trying to get home by instating a curfew without allowing people to get home. https://twitter.com/imactuallynina/status/1266912627193774080
And across the country, prosecutors, state legislators and governors like @andrewcuomo are enabling the spread of #COVID19 by refusing to #EndCashBail and forcing protestors to stay packed in tight spaces without masks for minor offenses.
If elected leaders refuse to keep their citizens safe, they will be held accountable or voted out. Period. Let’s start with the 70% of prosecutors that run unopposed every year. http://winningjustice.org
