My feed last night includes much of what I saw but I will reiterate that 99 percent of what I saw was a peaceful protest. When windows were broken by a few a crowd came to denounce it. The cops were actually helped by several who pushed others back. ...
I did witness incredible restraint at times by police who were getting hit by objects and sand near 23/Classen. I also saw tear gas fired into crowds that were literally on their knees with their hands up.
The gun that fires tear gas (at least I hope it was that one) was used several times to point at people to push them back, including myself. One officer even made a comment about how they can't control where they get shot at.
The scene waiting for people at the police HQ was made to intimidate and disorient. For someone like me that can draw fear and discomfort, but for others it raises the level of anger and adrenaline.
I also saw a black police officer have to keep a face of stone as some (definitely not the majority) called him a traitor. I can't even comprehend the feelings on either side.
Someone reporting on Minnesota said this, but I thought about it a lot: A modern police force can respond with army like force or be completely absent. I don't have a great answer for what the middle looks like, but that reality was on display last night.
