YES BLACK AMERICANS FEAR THE POLICE!! HERE’S A HISTORY LESSON WHY: A THREAD
(1) Yes, not all cops are bad but ALL cops work for an organization where they would rather inforce the rules of a broken system that has put African Americans at a disadvantage from the beginning of slavery & segregation, instead of protecting their own citizens.
(2) Yes, not all cops are bad but ALL cops work for an organization that has proven time and time again to let Racist White Men get away with murder and use their authority as a way to put them on a pedestal of superiority.
(3) Policing has ALWAYS been used as a mechanism for racial control. When it came 2 enforcing laws, police did so when we were first shipped to Amerikkka in boats. They used whips & chains to keep us in line, sold us and used their authority to make sure we worked for our Master
(4) w/o any revolt. Fast foward to segregation, historically, in both the South and the North, the police have defended and enforced racism and segregation—attacking civil rights protesters and disrupting strikes of black workers seeking to integrate workplaces and neighborhoods.
(5) When we peacefully protested, they used hoses, tear gas, weapons, and other inhumane amounts of force on us. And it didn’t stop there .. Stories of police harassment and violence in black communities are very common and seen every single day.
(6) Young black men are 21 times more likely to be shot and killed by police than young white men. They are more likely to face ongoing everyday slights and indignities at the hands of police. The underlying causes run deep:
(7) Black people often see police as the face of larger systems of inequality in the justice system, employment, education, and housing. And let’s not forget who put them there, at this disadvantage. Black people live in a system where they never even got a fair chance.
(8) Segregation, created by Racist White Men, created black communities where everything was less of to what White’s received. Segregation created these black communities, which are now seen as the ghetto, and made sure we had less job opportunities, education opportunities,
(9) and so forth. Amerikkka put us at this disadvantage, and everyday we still are making up for it. Because these communities receive less funding for education and services, crime rises. And when crime rises, the police get involved.
(10) As recent events have occurred, police still live in a system where they are using their authority to enforce these laws that were already built to harm African Americans, and that’s where the problem stems from.
(11) Without the advances of technology and people recording murders like that of George Floyd’s, the police would never be held accountable for their actions.
(12) Remember, Minneapolis Police only charged the officer who Murdered George in broad daylight because WE saw that video, NOT because THEY saw that video. Smart policing that is capable of telling the difference between petty crimes and serious threats, between the majority
(13) of law-abiding residents and the small minority of lawbreakers in a community, is quite possible. It happens every day in white communities across the U.S. Black communities often face higher rates of crime and thus want good relationships with law enforcement.
(14) But that is not likely until the U.S. finds a way to address its history of using the police as a tool to reinforce systems of racial inequity.
