Onward is actually an incredibly moving and rich story about the importance of fathers, male relationships, and legacy. I’m surprised. Of course, all of that is overlooked because there’s that one throwaway line from a barely-there character referencing her “girlfriend”.
The LGBTQ folks aren’t happy because it’s clearly brushed to the side, and the conservatives aren’t happy because the very throwaway nature of the one liner normalizes deviant behavior. I say use it!
When your kids watch the movie, use it as an opportunity to discuss that moment w/them in an age-appropriate way. If you’re reading scripture with them, they already know what homosexuality is. Now show them how to deal with it when they inevitably meet it in the world.
Practice these discussions at home, so that your kids aren’t the kids that go off to university and come back atheists because the tough stuff was never dealt with. As ND says, the world is rated R and no one is checking IDs.
Of course I’m not saying to unnecessarily expose your children to filth. But this moment in Onward? It’s a rated G spoon fed moment that can launch you into conversation you MUST have with your kids. If you don’t, the world will do it for you, and they want your kids hearts.
