My wife and I just spent all morning flipping through church live-streams hoping to hear ANYTHING about #GeorgeFloyd and how we as the Church should connect with the Black community. Here’s what we found: (A thread)
1. Lots of cheerful worship music. The same stuff we always play. This is a flags-at-half-mast time of mourning, or at least it should be. So why are we singing praise songs that gloss over suffering and grief instead of processing it?
2. One sermon exclusively about Pentecost. Would’ve been a great opportunity to discuss diversity and inclusivity, connect the holiday with current events, but not one mention of George or the protests or the Black community.
3. One pastor who talked about diversity in the church but still refused to say #GeorgeFloyd’s name or mention the protests at all.
Nothing else. That’s it. I’m furious at this Church’s inadequate response to the world’s suffering. We should be leading the charge for people’s rights and for justice for all God’s children, but instead we’re sitting on our hands and ignoring it all. Shameful. #BlackLivesMatter
End of thread.
