My undergrad research career has ended sadly.... but here’s some things I’ve learn on the way!:

🧵
- undergrad research saved my academic career
I wanted to research, knew I needed to keep my grades up so I did that as best as I could continue researching. PI’s please take more undergrads, especially first-gen minorities. This one act can make or break someone
- ask the dumb questions

No question is dumb. I’ve asked and answered questions ranging from “hey, what do you to get from x to z” and then questions like “do you think aliens exist”

All get asked. All questions are fair game.
- talk to the people in lab

I didnt for my first 4 months (don’t ask me how), and then some of the grad students introduced themselves to me. Thank you for them as friends, their expertise, and eventual mentorship. I learned so much under them about science and life.
- it’s okay to feel emotions

I’ve cried, I’ve been frustrated, and I’ve been so happy I could barely stay still in lab multiple times. You’re not a robot you’re a human. Take your emotions and feel them. Step out if needed
-time management

You learn how to research, go to class, eat, hangout with friends, and go back to lab (in that order one time, many times not)

Make sure you eat
Make sure you hangout in college
Make sure you study
Those are all important and can help you in lab trust
- conference yes

Even if it’s a small local one, it’s sharing your work. Be proud.
- have fun

It’s fun trust. There’s new stuff. But it fun. If you don’t like it you do have the option of leaving (remember this my first gen, underrepresented in stem minorities). But if you have fun time flies
Lastly, yes it hurts to leave.

Also here a video to watch of a panel of first gen minority students (including me) hosted by @engageucr

Check it out:
Also PI’s if you’re not fostering undergrad reasearch... especially of minority students... then what are you doing???

It’s okay to train an undergrad... please we need it

Times now are weird but full fledge get some when it’s safe to come back

Also actually mentor them
Also lastly, undergrads... you’re going to get told no a lot... get used to it and move on. You only need one yes!

This also applies to grad school, grants, scholarships, etc.
