Right now, science and all the projects I have to do don't feel important. They feel like distractions so the status quo can remain unchallenged. So today I suggested our lab works through this workbook together - "me and white supremacy" by Layla F. Saad
#BlackLivesMatter
I am hoping we can all work through it, and have a once-weekly meet up to reflect on what we have learned about our role in upholding these systems. I have included the language I used in my message, in case others want to suggest this for their lab:
"In ecology, we're in a unique field where our work requires us to go into remote areas, or small towns, or to wander around property with suspicious looking equipment. 1/3
"As a predominantly white lab, we might not recognize that this experience can be unsafe for people who don't look like us. There are a million other things we don't realize, because we are sheltered by our privilege. 2/3
"And it is not enough to claim we ourselves are not racist, we need to do work to ensure we are anti-racist." 3/3

Feel free to take what I said and adapt it to your situation. The workbook is available online, or you can purchase it here: https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com/
Also if you aren't in our lab and want to join in on this, shoot me a message!
