Stop calling cops “mentally ill”, “psychopaths”, and “sociopaths”. The police aren’t mentally ill, they’re racist.
Being racist isn’t a fucking empathy disorder, it’s willful ignorance and hatred.

Just because someone can’t understand other people’s feelings does not mean they are terrible people. You can still acknowledge and listen to other people’s struggles without understanding them.

I’ve met many people with empathy disorders!! I spent ~3 years exclusively surrounded by peers with mental illness. I met racist mentally ill people too. Sickness was never the cause of their racism, it was their refusal to look beyond their world view.
And don’t get me wrong, mental illness CAN cloud people’s judgement and impact their actions, but at the end of the day we are still required to take responsibility for our own actions, even when influenced by things out of our control.
**Personality disorder
I was informed empathy disorder is not a proper term. The correct terminology is personality disorder. I’m sorry.

Also I want to add on, even if you do think their cruelty must be influenced by a disorder, all you are doing by claiming they are sociopaths is villainizing people with these disorders.
And mental illness does not excuse hurting people. We still make conscious choices.

If someone is not experiencing delusion or ab episode and they are aiming their gun at someone, you can be pretty fucking sure they consciously made that decision.
People have made important points in the replies so I would like to reform and clarify my message.

In summary: yes the fact that they are able to do such cruel things may be a lack of empathy BUT they are still fully responsible for making the choice to harm people. They are still responsible for their actions, regardless of what may or may not give them the ability to do it.
