My take home from today's session:
1.Academic writing is hard, it's a process. You don't get it write on the first go. It's a learning process.
2. WHY. Why do you write? Is it for publications? Your PhD thesis? Your Master's dissertation?

... or are you writing to reflect on your practice or to search for meaning.
3. WHO are you writing for? Who is your audience? Be aware of the kind of reader you're writing for. Remember that readers start reading your work with their own preconceived thoughts and opinions.
4. Academic writing is very different from newspaper articles or internet blogs. Make sure you walk your reader through your paper.
5. Be aware of other scholars/researchers in your field. Make sure you know which knowledge exists already so you know what you bring to the table.
6. Remember when writing your external examiners want to see how knowledge you are. No need to use bombastic word, simplicity is key.
7. Don't just use outdated sources, my supervisor always says don't rely on sources older than 10 years.
8. When reading an article look at the styles of writing and ask yourself what makes a good article. A article should have clear, coherent & concise arguments. And should be well structured, original and relevant.
9. When writing, do not confuse the reader, lead them through it.
10. Prof @FabAcademic said "tell a story to support an argument to solve a problem".
11. After writing one paragraph read through it & think what would your critical reader think. Write the kind of paper that you would like to read.
12. Dr @lhatiph said academic writing has two components: process and outcomes. And we should let our ideas flow. He also said "if you don't read you cannot write". Furthermore he said make sure you provide a reference for each sentence. No sweeping statements.
13. Dr @lhatiph said "there's a difference between quotation & citation". And make sure you make use of peer reviewed sources and avoid fully relaying on those that aren't peer reviewed.
Thank you Prof @FabAcademic & Dr @lhatiph for this very insightful session.
