The Toronto G20 Police Riot was 10 years ago so let me recall a few things for those too young to remember it well.

1. Police removed their name/badge tags in large numbers to avoid accountability.
2. Police & Government announced a special government order had suspended the right to decline to be searched within a certain distance of the giant G20 area cordon. This was a lie, to intimidate the public.
3. Protesting took place over the weekend. On Saturday, somehow, a Police cruiser parked downtown got torched. This evidently pissed off the police and the gloves were taken off. The Police rioted. Mass unnecessary violence & no-cause arrests began.
4. Over 1000 people were arrested and held at a cold industrial warehouse in the east end. It had inadequate staffing, bathrooms, no sleeping accommodations and no privacy for female detainees with male guards.
5. A legless man protesting peacefully at Queen& #39;s Park (Seat of the provincial legislature) couldn& #39;t move quickly enough so police dragged him.
6. Adam Nobody (his legal name I believe) had his arm broken by a strike from a club from behind him.
7. On Sunday the Police began employing "kettling" a practice of blocking whole areas and detaining everyone there supposedly to get some target, but they often just arrested everyone there.
8. Kettling was employed all over the city well away from the G20 zone, and many completely uninvolved people got caught up by bad luck. It was cold and rainy on Sunday so some were stuck getting soaked for hours.
9. 1000 people arrested & detained with very very few actually charged far exceeds Canada& #39;s response to the FLQ Crisis in the 70s. There, a provincial cabinet member was kidnapped & the FLQ used bombs.
There was much more, this is just what I remember without googling. It was a gross overreaction to a few corporate windows being smashed and a police cruiser being burned. The cops taught us dirty civies a lesson in who was boss. It was gang warfare, not law enforcement.
