I wrote an article called "Dear NYPD: You Need a Talent Management Overhaul" in 2015. I took a lot of heat for it. It even went viral among NYPD cops so much so that it reached to the ranks of the NYPD'S commissioner's desk. At the time, the deaths of black men had worn on me.
I didn't just expose the problem of @NYPDnews, I petitioned to be a part of the solution. The lawyer for the NYPD wrote me back at the time with instruction on how to become a vendor for the city. A bandaid and a clear "let's shut this woman up" and get her off our backs.
The article went so viral that it reached all social media platforms among the NYPD cop circles. So much so that, my Dad, (a retired Sergeant for the NYPD) stumbled upon another cop on FB sharing my article saying " Who the eff is this woman? She sounds like a real ballbuster".
He continued she needs to "tend to her home" so as to make it clear there was no space for me in discussing what's wrong with the department. My Dad jumped in to my defense where I was being called all the typical chauvinist names. Letting these men and others know who I was.
My Dad added that not only was I an accomplished professional, but I was also his daughter. He asked this group of NYPD cops how they would like it if they went online to see their daughters being called names simply for speaking the truth. He added that nothing I said was false.
The ringleader at the time was a white man. He quickly apologized to my Dad & told my Dad he had two daughters of his own & that he understood where he was coming from. I share this to illustrate how dangerous it is for Black people in America. It isn't safe to speak the truth.
When we speak to unmask life in America we are accused of being aggressive, not being a "team player", "pulling the race card", or my favorite "always complaining and never being satisfied". What is there to be satisfied with? You pillage our communities for profit. #NYC
My spirit has been moved this morning to go on record that I tried to be a part of the solution 5 years ago here in #NYC. Several of my family members circulated my article through the ranks and they didn't bite, because doing the status quo is in service to their bottomline.
