Parents of white kids/teenagers. Our kids are very aware of what is happening in this country through social media.

This is good but can also be bad... why?: 1/n

It’s good because we need politically aware young people to become allies. We need our children to see themselves as part of a larger system and as having a stake in the world we create.

Why is it not good? 2/

It’s not good because white supremacists occupy online spaces and have worked for years to court our young white boys. Their version of what is happening in America is not the version we want our kids to come away with. 3/

Be sure to have conversations about these issues, ask questions, see what they know and what they believe, supplement, and contextualize. Offer additional resources. 4/

Discuss the deliberate use of social media by white supremacists to indoctrinate young adolescent boys. They are being sold a “red pill” because they desperately want to feel in control. Learning that “red pilling” itself turns them into pawns may make them stop and think.

It’s hard work and yes our kids sometimes think we are the “out of touch normies” but it’s our job to prove them wrong. Do NOT leave it up to reddit and Tik Tok to shape how your kids come to see this moment.
