My next rant will be on this.... https://twitter.com/hofrench/status/1266756889238556674
My interest & passion in international relations is very much rooted in my own story, as the daughter of Turkish immigrants to the US. Emigrating was hard for my parents, who didn't speak English. Had Turkey had better opportunities, they wouldn't have felt the need to leave. 1/
I got into international relations in order to help improve & contribute to the advancement of under developed countries, so that ppl like my parents didn't have to leave their homes, their cultures, their families. 2/
As someone in the field, here is what I deal w: white men & women in power, making decisions and shape perspectives that impact places like Turkey & elsewhere. I have been met w eye rolls when I've spoken up about what needs to be done, whether in Turkey or the Middle East. 3/
If you're not seeking out the opinion of the ppl being impacted, if you're not consulting w ppl who look like or speak the language of the places you claim to work on, ask yourself why you're doing it. No one needs white saviors. Go find praise from other sources. 4/
And the sad thing is, as someone who spends more time doing, particularly amplifying women's voices & advocating on behalf of others, will be completely ignored, eclipsed by the privileged, who have the luxury of spending time on Twitter rather than doing actual work.
