Listen to @documentnow as well as @witnessorg for advice from archivists who actually understand trauma informed practices under volatile situations. Do not trust archivists like Jason Scott who claim “we’ll figure it out later” during volatile situations. https://twitter.com/documentnow/status/1267072586233470983
For the last several years archivists have been establishing clear ethical guidelines and frameworks around collection, and if you’ve been paying attention it often includes the fact that collection done wrong can seriously endanger activists
We KNOW that organizers, and especially black organizers, have been targeted for retaliation in recent years. Do not let your urge to document history as it happens get ahead of established ethical frameworks.
Archivists, if you feel like you’d rather grab a bunch of videos off YouTube or Twitter instead of building relationships with organizers first, maybe sit with why you feel that way. And why you haven’t built those relationships since Ferguson.
