It's @BMatB taking the @tigerinstemm handle - partly in the preparation for some discussions in and around Pride month, and partly because silence is deafening. #BlackLivesMatter

There are many aspects of our culture that are racist, & white people (like myself) benefit, at the cost of many others. It is simply not enough to say "I am not a racist" - we have to listen & stand up, together with our colleagues, amplify their voices and create lasting change
Listen to @DrNiiAddy, and remember about this 'under discussed' extra load that our Black colleagues do to support people in their communities, fight racism, AND also do the same job that white colleagues do https://twitter.com/DrNiiAddy/status/1266896860121366530
There are many many more Black voices that we need to amplify, and to support. We have to bring their voices to the table, listen to them, support them to move their ideas forward, enable them to make decisions, and collectively we will move towards better future.

This tweet back in the thread annoys me slightly - it's not right.
The tables we have right now are not good enough. We need new tables.
The system we have right now has baked in racism and colonialism. https://twitter.com/tigerinstemm/status/1267075042241908737?s=19

Listening and highlighting Black voices, across academia both in the UK and beyond, highlights that in terms of racism, as I started, remains. The "silence is deafening".
We are not in a post racial society.
Racism is overt. Racism is subtle. Racism is built in.

These ideas are well studied, but often 'forgotten'. As such, many of these underpin a 'liberal racism', and to actively address these we have to listen, reflect and improve.

If you are reading these feeds - we have many amazing Black colleagues in academia.
They are being individually, and collectively, impacted by the clear and apparent racism, both in 'real life' and in academia.
As allies, we must listen and do better.

These issues of racism are acute in the US right now.
Yet, they have always been there.
They create and sustain structural disadvantages for our Black colleagues to survive, let alone thrive.

Are you listening? Good.
Are you following more Black people? Better.
Have you thought about how racism impacts your day life, how it privilege sustains it and how people are rendered unequal? Even better.
Are you making steps to correct this wrong? Now we are talking...
