If you think race has nothing to do with your STEM class please realize that Step 1 of so many is an acknowledgement of the role race plays in science. Even if you are early on this journey of being an ally, as I am, you don't have to be an expert or know all the answers
Step 1 is as simple of an acknowledgement of what your students might be going through. Give students space to get some of those thoughts out on paper. Acknowledge that learning may be hard right now. Acknowledge that you can never truly understand but you strive to be an ally.
Acknowledge the power structures that exist in science.
Acknowledge the lack of diversity in science.
Acknowledge the ways that science has impacted certain groups in negative ways. Of course science has impacted everyone in positive ways as well.
Acknowledge your mentees' challenges entering the job market.
There's so much more we can do, acknowledgement is only Step 1 of many.
