Have also been processing feelings around current situation in the US, especially the overwhelming reaction in Aust. Of course as a Blackfella I stand in solidarity with African Americans. That's a given. My ppl were racialised as Black as part of ongoing colonial violence.
But, it has really been something to see how Australians are carrying on. The media, the non-Indigenous activists, the everyday social media user.
There is great analysis of how Aust loves to highlight racial violence in America, but not when it comes to Blackfellas. They rarely stand in solidarity with us. Previous BLM protests, organised without us, with larger numbers than Aboriginal protests on similar issues are proof.
In the past I've pushed hard against using US race politics in Aust context. I've also pushed hard against the kind of cultural imperialism we have seen from the US. We can see all that at play here.
There's more to unpack about global internet culture though. Also about social media and connectivity. About cultural centres. About colourism and what is perceived as cool in internet culture/being woke on US race politics/American influenced pop culture where woke is a brand.
I just wrote a thread about HK - and it has far less likes than this one. Which in a way proves my point - I feel for HK because it's a place I culturally identify with as part of the Chinese diaspora. I've worked hard not to be consumed by US global culture.
