Dear HKers who see the protests in the US and want to distance or distinguish yourselves: I want to say that what you're doing is similar to when the rest of the world watched and judged HK last summer. Remember how that felt?
Many outside said, "Why is HK breaking into LegCo, burning the MTR, and smashing Starbucks?" You watched, screaming silently inside, as people who should have been your best allies weren't sure whether to support the HK movement. The audacity that they could judge HK from afar!
But HKers said to the world, "Please listen to why we're doing this. Please learn about our many years of struggle." And many did listen. I hope HK can do the same for those struggling in the US. That's what you expected them to do for you, after all.
It takes time to learn about someone else's history, and things might not make sense at first. If you can't take time to learn, that's ok, too. At least trust that they know best how to express their own struggle, and support them in it.
If you'd like to talk about it, my DMs are open.
