What's going on in the Philippines? a thread. #JunkTerrorBill #MassTestingNowPH #OustDuterte
- while many filipinos are expressing support for the blm, i see little to none discussing the current issues of the ph. as a filipino,
i implore everyone to also be informed in our problems and find ways to speak out against them.
1. The Anti Terrorism Bill
Senate Bill 1083, also known as the 'Anti-Terrorism Bill' was passed in the Senate last FEBRUARY 2020. Last FRIDAY, May 29, it passed the committee level in the House of Representatives, bringing it a step closer into being enacted as a law
WHY IS THIS ALARMING? The bill, if passed, essentially allows the government to pick and choose what defines terrorism. Below is a list of things explicitly defined as terrorism by the bill. You may notice that some provisions are downright ridiculous.
This bill CLEARLY infringes upon the 1987 PHILIPPINE CONSTITUTION and is against our basic human rights. By passing this, the government is aiming to shut down our voices and opinions, especially with the way they are handling the COVID19 situation in the Philippines.
Here's a short thread about some concerning provisions in the bill, as studied by Chel Diokno. It's a simple, informative thread.

So WHY would the government be scared of people criticizing the way they are handling the sickness in the PH?
2. The COVID19 situation in the Philippines.
YESTERDAY, the country recorded 590 new cases. 590. This brings our total to over 17,000 confirmed cases. https://twitter.com/ABSCBNNews/status/1266763657263767552
The World Bank also approved a new loan of $500M to the PH government to fight against the virus; however, this is not the first financial aid the PH has accepted. See here for a list of how much debt the government has incurred: https://twitter.com/baldozeeer/status/1266000425750114305?s=21 https://twitter.com/baldozeeer/status/1266000425750114305
Please note this is TAXPAYER'S MONEY. We are the ones paying off every single loan the government is making. Added to this, we are still not done paying off loans from the Marcos era during the 1960s-1980s. This is getting out of hand.
It is even more insane to think that even with all the money the government is keeping in their pockets, there has been NO PROGRAM for mass testing in the country. We are clamoring for proper testing kits and to use these on a more widespread count of the population to
be able to isolate and effectively treat this people and eventually the spread of the disease. Mass testing programs have been successful in countries like South Korea and Vietnam.
Despite the ballooning number of cases and no program for mass testing, the government has declared an ease on the enhanced community quarantine, changing to a general community quarantine starting tomorrow, June 1.
With less restrictions on going out and moving around, no doubt more people would be inticed to meet up and gather. This would cause another spike in cases. Another issue is that the government will cease giving financial aid to low-income families, many of which depend on this
to be able to eat and provide for their basic needs. Other rules in the GCQ excluded PUVs from operation during this period, again leaving many families with no means of income. https://twitter.com/abscbnnews/status/1266897181337927680?s=21 https://twitter.com/abscbnnews/status/1266897181337927680
There have also been numerous unjustified arrests during the ECQ. Currently, no bail orgs have been arranged for them. [If anyone knows arrangements for bail, please link them below!] There have also been many cases of police brutality upon people who were trying to buy basic
needs during the ECQ. There was also a reports of multiple "sex for pass" schemes police at checkpoints did upon women who were just attempting to pass through. This is unacceptable.
So, what can you do to help?
1. SPREAD AWARENESS. Filipinos especially, please put the same energy in supporting blm into these issues as well. Use social media to rt and share information.
2. Educate your friends and families. Let's be honest. You probably know someone who's
DDS. If you can, reach out to them and explain what the president is doing wrong. Educate others in the wrongdoings of the government and implore them to rethink their views. It's scary, I know, but activism starts in our homes.
3. Sign petitions! Even if mass petitions are barely recognized in the Philippines, a little goes a long way. Here's a link to one you might want to consider signing (and don't forget to share after!) http://chng.it/6TTpph9S
4. Email! Here's a template and the addresses of the Malacañang. This one is for calling for the rejection of the ATB. https://twitter.com/ihsoka/status/1266550116392951808?s=21 https://twitter.com/ihsoka/status/1266550116392951808
BUT! If you're emailing, use a burner email and a VPN so they can't trace your IP address. Keep your safety a priority as well.
And that's the end of the thread. I hope this was informative and if there are any mistakes, shoot me a dm and i will correct asap. I hope even intl oomfs can rt this to spread awareness outside our country as well! This deserves worldwide attention. Our government is failing us.
WAIT LAST. NUMBER 5. can't believe i forgot this.
VOTE!!! YES, VOTE!!! if you're of age/can get a voter id soon, please do asap!! get the fuckers who decided this bill was more important than the sickness out of their seats. here they are:
6. With GCQ occurring tomorrow, please DO NOT GO OUT UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. No craving is worth risking your health and others. If you have to go out, wear a mask!
