Reality check on #WorldNoTobaccoDay

A Thread (1/11)

Will we ever realise the ill-effects of Tobacco? Smoking or smokeless, are our efforts to create an awareness making enough impact? Or are we really countering our own efforts in more than one way? Let me break this down.

We live in a country where Bollywood dwells in the minds of the masses. On a 1080p resolution, we have an actor with over a million followers posing with a cigarette in his mouth. On the other hand in the corner of a screen we have five magical words saying...

..."Smoking is injurious to Health." Do we really believe that that statement written in the smallest of font size can forbid the masses from following the footsteps of that actor/actress whose face is their lockscreen wallpaper?

When the lockdown began to ease, local shops began to open up. Long queues over two kilometres long were evident outside the smallest of shops. They stood in the scorching heat for their personal "essential" - anything containing tobacco.

It is no amusement if I say tobacco is one of the main reasons for oral cancer. How many still choose the risky path of consuming tobacco? It is saddening that this is not restricted to rural areas. The "literate" urban also takes a dip of shame in this bullet point.

Tobacco containing products bare a gross picture of a tumor that can often force an individual to refrain from even touching the packet. But are people really scared? Forget the laymen, healthcare workers themselves are addicted to tobacco.

This is exactly when addicts checkmate doctors who advise them to quit smoking. "But I have seen doctors smoke/chew tobacco!" End of story. Nothing much you can do there.

Tobacco addiction is a serious issue. It has won over our strongest weapon - Literacy. Can we dream of a future without tobacco? Probably not. What can we do then? Does this tale draw similar lines to the one where there was no vaccine for a pandemic? Think about it.
