hey white people let’s talk!

if you’re planning to attend a protest make sure you’re ready to LISTEN to organizers! if you can’t fully commit to that, please stay home. this is not about us—your job is to use your privilege to protect others and give them space to be heard.
don’t lead chants!
-your voice takes space away from Black people
-participate in chants that apply to you and think about what you’re actually saying (ex: our privilege means these are already “our streets” so maybe sit that one out)
protests aren’t photoshoots!
-nobody needs an instagram post with a paragraph about how supportive you are (that’s the bare minimum and you don’t get a trophy) so your friend doesn’t need to take a pic of you posing with a cop car
-use social media to elevate Black voices instead
don’t post anything that can be used to ID protesters!
-this puts people in danger of being targeted
-if you’ve got your camera out it should be pointed at the cops or bad actors to document their actions
call out other white people!
(as you can see i’m still working on this one)
-they’re likely to be receptive to what you’re saying
-Black people shouldn’t be responsible for keeping white people in check but they are the ones who’ll be most in danger if things escalate
*bonus* for the white folks wearing ‘i can’t breathe’ face masks:
that shit doesn’t come off how you think it does—the whole point is that police aren’t suffocating YOU because of the color of your skin. they’re doing that to Black people (the people you’re there to support)
