People don't want to believe that a great deal of normal Americans hate other Americans fundamentally, so the astroturf angle is emphasized. The Left tells us exactly what they are about, and the Right punches at ghosts while vilifying whites alongside of the Left.

Rather than simply uniting around law and order, something any decent person can agree with regardless of race, the intellectuals of the Right actually point the finger at white people and tell them to accept being the scapegoat

And the mainstream Right basically does the same thing with immigration: we can and should take in more immigrants/guest workers because anything else is crypto white supremacy
