50 Black authors/artists/creatives to support right now: THREAD.

This list is limited and personal, feel free to add your own. Black authors/artists, if you have cash apps or other ways we can show support, please comment and I will RT. 1/?
Some of these are free (talks/blogs), some are links to books or Patreons. Do what you can.

I've also included biographical details, bc too often we look to the Black community to be educational resources, but ignore who they are as people. Not cool. 2/?
@IjeomaOluo pointed out that there's enough sadness going around fruitlessly right now. If you lose a friend, you don't tell that friend's spouse how sad you are - you show up with support. Starting with Oluo herself, who wrote the incredible So You Want to Talk About Race. 3/?
She's "not the white-person whisperer", but she is a terrific writer, a Seattlite, and gosh darned magnificent at make-up. (I wish I had the dexterity to recreate some of her eye looks). 4/?
How to support @IjeomaOluo:

- Buy her books https://bookshop.org/books?keywords=ijeouma+oluo
- Donate to the Seattle Artist Relief Fund https://ca.gofundme.com/f/for-artists
- Follow her Medium https://medium.com/@IjeomaOluo
- Watch her Google talk 5/?
Our next writer is also from Seattle, the incredible poet @lutherxhughes. Published in The Rumpus and The Paris Review, Hughes is the founder and editor of The Shade Journal. His poetry is breathtaking, and he's very funny. He also posts a lot of thirst selfies on Twitter. 6/?
@BrittneyMMorris is one of the most exciting upcoming authors in the YA space. Her debut novel, SLAY, is equal parts thrilling and touching. She's a gamer, video game writer, an inspiration, and I hope she doesn't mind me saying, a delightful nerd. 8/?
@alechiawrites is an American in Berlin, and a true sweetheart. If you love a great big dose of hope in your sci-fi, and food porn of insane baked treats on your TL, give this talented writer-baker a follow. 10/?
@JasonReynolds83 is The National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature and an incredibly moving author. Converted from an early non-reader into an astounding voice, Jason's love of community shines through his stories. In turn, he is beloved by kids, teachers & librarians. 12/?
@angiecthomas writes astounding YA that will knock your socks off. She's also a legendary resource for Pelicans trivia, being quantifiably their Number 1 fan. 14/?
How to support @angiecthomas:

- Books: https://bookshop.org/books?keywords=angie+thomas
- Buy or rent The Hate U Give movie (trailer here):
- Cheer the Pelicans (jk but you could support their charitable events and community programs): https://www.nba.com/pelicans/community/programs 15/?
@getnicced is an NYT bestselling author, Spelman College alumnus, and Slytherin. I want to know where she buys her lipstick, and how she feels about making us, her poor readers, cry. 16/?
@whimsicallyours is a triple threat: a literary agent, editor and author all in one. Editor of the Black girl magic anthology A Phoenix First Must Burn (a great source for new favourite authors), Patrice also offers amazing lit advice here on Twitter, regularly. 18/?
@AcevedoWrites has won more awards than I've had hot dinners, and it's no surprise why. Her contribution to A Phoenix First Must Burn (Gilded) was so riveting, I immediately ordered her new book, Clap When You Land. 20/?
Amerie (not on Twitter).

I'm going to let my ignorance show and admit I had no idea this incredible storyteller was also a Grammy award-winner! I honestly just fell in love with her fiction first.

Find her on IG: https://www.instagram.com/amerie/?hl=en  22/?
(Sorry if these are getting a little curt, I'm trying to get them all done tonight! Spending more time on smaller names than big ones). 23/?
@brownbookworm writes heart-wrenching fiction. (I still haven't got over her short story, Hearts Turned to Ash, a far-too-real rendering of first love and first heartbreak). 24/?
11 people in, and Twitter said I couldn't add any more tweets without sending those out. So get ready for a long night! 26/?
@jmarcellecorrie doesn't have nearly enough followers for her skill level, so start by following her. Sequence (her contribution to A Phoenix First Must Burn) has everything you love to see in fiction: cute queerness, fun high concept, beautiful writing. 27/?
How to support @jmarcellecorrie:

- Follow her damn Twitter!
- Website: http://www.jmarcellecorrie.com/
- Support diverse publisher @LEEandLOW, where Jalissa works as the Marketing Manager (dream job!) 28/?
Belated happy birthday to @somaiyadaud! With a PhD and a knack for writing gripping tales, this is an author you won't soon forget. Having read her short fiction, I can't wait to read Mirage (her debut novel). I also have a little glasses envy. 29/?
@cndwrites made my head spin with All The Time in the World (in A Phoenix First Must Burn). I can't wait to read more from them - and neither should you!

14 down, 46 to go! I'm not complaining, this is literally the least I can do. Just a pre-emptive apology to those further down the list - it's going to take me a while to get there. 32/?
@justinaireland describes herself thus: "I write about zombies and space wizards." I can't come up with a better intro, it's perfect.

Reading Tender-Headed by @weredawgz made my spine shiver, in the best way. A sweet yet terrifying tale! I need to get my hands on their comics. You should too.

The great thing about @ElleOnWords is she has a whole award-winning series to dive head first into. The bad thing is you'll disappear for a month. Wait, did I say bad?

Ok folks, so we're halfway there (25). It's 1:20am here, and if I don't sleep properly, I can trigger seizures, so I'm going to continue this list in the morning, when I can see straight. Thanks for your patience! 44/?, TBC.
Ok, I've slept, I've got a big cup of tea, and I've Skyped my mum (I promised her I'd wear a helmet if I go protesting - which I will if there are any in my area).

Let's continue with the final 25! 45/?
Just a quick clarification: this list isn't in an order of preference, it's a kind of random mish-mash of artists I've encountered that have made an impact on me with their work. Also, if I include charity links, it's because they have publicly supported that cause. 46/?
@PBW_Poet is a poet, writer, teacher, and multi award-winner. I'm biased toward fiction, so when a poet sticks with me, it's because their words knocked the breath right out of me. Phillip B. Williams is a great example of that phenomenon. 47/?
Support @PBW_Poet:

- Website: https://www.phillipbwilliams.com/
- Send him videos of Toni Morrison! He's starting a video library. Here's one from PEN American (1982). 48/?
Just a side-note: Toni Morrison's oral delivery - her cadence, her tone, the softness but strength of her voice - is extremely reflective of her work, and utterly mesmerizing. Rest in Power. 49/?
While you're reading all these amazing authors, why not listen to @whoisDSharp? This LA-based violinist will make you wonder where you'd be if you'd kept up with lessons (and then admit, probably not far).

@mayabphillips is an art critic, writer and poet with a spectacular voice. Instead of baking some friggin' bread and having a break, she's graced us with two new NYT articles this lockdown. God bless anxiety.

30 down, 20 more to go! 54/?
@DungeonCommandr (aka Orion Black) is one of my favourite people on the internet. A game designer for Wizards of the Coast (that's D&D, folks), they consistently challenge me to rethink my assumptions in a way that makes me believe their D&D modules must be fiendishly smart. 55/?
@BrichibiTweets is an all-round creative geek: cosplayer, sewer, writer, bundle of human delight. During the pandemic, she's been making an awesome range of geeky facemasks.

@IfyNwadiwe is horny on main. He's also one of the funniest TTRPG players and streamers out there, and yes, he lifts. Can you tell?

Watch him in Escape from the Bloodkeep: https://bit.ly/2MfIF4T  58/?
@SirenSong_Jes is quiet online, but deserves your love. We met at a @TheZoneCast live show in Seattle, and she had THE BEST cosplay there. A talented stitcher, cosplayer, author and composer, and all-round lovely person. Show her some love on IG ( https://www.instagram.com/siren_song_jes/ ). 59/?
Some of the names on here are going to be big, some small. Like I say, this is a personal list, and every one of these names deserves your support (IMO). 60/?
@ericsmithrocks can really pull off a flat cap, which, as a Yorkshire person, I have to stan. He's also an incredible writer and agent, and posts great advice/cute pictures of that kid-life chaos. 61/?
Ok, now we have some momentum! (Turns out this is a lot easier when I'm not falling asleep at my keyboard). 35 down, 15 still to come! 63/?
@freeblackgirl is the Editor in Chief for Bitch media. If that wasn't cool enough, she also has a book called Fat Girls Deserve Fairytales Too.

@iSmashFizzle's kitchen looks eerily similar to mine, but hers is clean. She's written for basically everyone, hosted podcasts, given insightful interviews, and always has an enormous smile.

(I wanted to make a wheyyy 69 tweets joke, but @iSmashFizzle deserves better. Moving on). 70/?
@nhannahjones is the Beyoncé of journalism (her words, and I can't disagree). Her work The 1619 Project is a great starting point for looking back at the history of anti-Blackness in America.

@jerichobrown doesn't need Hell to be good. He looks great in a flower crown. His collection, The Tradition, is Pulitzer-winning. Like medicine, it's sometimes bitter to swallow, but good god it heals.

@renireni is a writer, podcaster, journalist, Forbes 30 under 30 luminary. She wrote the phenomenal Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, and is probably tired of white people adding her to lists like this one (sorry Reni).

Website: http://renieddolodge.co.uk/about/  74/?
Lou Wilson is an actor, writer, comedian, and D&D player who I wish would come back to Twitter. Lou's sense of humour and empathy makes the world a better, funnier, more liveable place. I have an unrestrainable crush on him.

Insta: https://www.instagram.com/sweetlouzinho/  75/?
As a #PitchWars Committee Member, @AyanaGray is on the front line of getting more Black voices published. She's also an excellent YA fantasy author in her own right. Her presence makes writing much less lonely.

@oheysteenz is an award-winning cartoonist with an upcoming book on the history of TTRPGs that makes me fizzy with excitement. Her art is heartwarming, queer, hilarious.

(Btw @oheysteenz I will be stalking your feed for a pre-order link. 2023 is so far away!)

Hugo? Check. Nebula? Check. @nkjemisin has won all the biggies in sci-fi. She also wrote a book based on the Mass Effect universe, which makes her an instant favourite for me.

Books: https://bookshop.org/books?keywords=nk+jemisin

Last but not least of my recommendations is @alexisthenedd. An entertainment reporter and soon-to-be author (YA romance in esports? Yes please!), Alexis is an endless source of hilarity on Twitter and beyond.

I'd like to point out, these are just a handful of current folks who you can support right now, plucked from the top of my head. However, there's also a wealth of historical writings from sadly passed Black authors. What, you thought I'd finished with the reading list? Nah! 81/?
Octavia Butler - riveting, prescient sci-fi.
James Baldwin - sharp yet beautiful commentary.
Toni Morrison - queen. Will make you cry.
Malcolm X - read before you judge.
MLK - read Letters from a Birmingham Jail, not just that one line from I Have a Dream. 82/?
Listen to Tupac. You'll learn a hell of a lot from his lyrics. Listen to Lupe Fiasco (a current artist). Read this entire drive, FOR FREE, on race academia, from @haaniyah_. https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1ly0rh6De0R7F9E6CdYy6PV-p9Zomtak2?sort=13&direction=a 83/?
It's ok to feel lost as to how to help, but it's not ok to just sit with that perpetually. You have to choose a path. Even something small, like a thread, or picking up a book. Talk to your "challenging" family members. Put your body first in protests. 84/?
Not everyone can do everything. I have been too poor and too disabled to contribute my body or my funds at different points in my life. I could still listen, still educate myself and those around me. And I'm just one dumb person. 85/?
Seriously. I'm still on a steep learning curve. I'm working through these resources, challenging my own assumptions, rethinking my approach, every day. It's ok to be a cog in a greater machine towards justice, as long as you keep turning. 86/?
I'm doing this because I want to contribute something. I've spent this year reading nothing but Black authors, and it's been educational on multiple levels - including realizing how often I can't find these books on prominent display in shops. 87/?
The more we listen, the more we'll understand and be able to help. Also, Black creatives fight to get their work out there, so let's fucking pay them already. 88/?
I'm going to sign off, but I'll be here to RT any additional names, correct anything I've got wrong, etc. This was one small thing I could do to help. I challenge you to go find your contribution for the day (maybe by supporting someone on this list!) 89/END.
You can follow @SephyHallow.
