1989 Korey Wise, at 16 was sent to prison and served 14 years for a crime he didn’t commit. Trump called for the death penalty on Korey and the 4 other INNOCENT children arrested. Today he protested in Harlem for the same “justice” system that took away his childhood.
Korey wasn’t a suspect of the crime to start - he went to the precinct to support a friend. He was the oldest of the children and could be interrogated by the police without a guardian. White police pushed this crime on Korey, forcing a mixed up confession, charged as an adult.
Linda Fairstein and her team had a white woman who was assaulted and needed to find the suspect. They pinned it on these children. Korey had learning and hearing disabilities, making him an “easy target” to coerce a confession. DNA samples didn’t even match the children.. guilty.
4 of the children were age ranged 14-15, they were found guilty and sentenced to 5-10 years in a youth correctional facility (until they were 21). Korey was sentenced 5-15 years- all to be served in adult prison. White police did this to these children. They did this to Korey.
Korey later met the person actually responsible for the crime and after knowing Korey in prison, he admitted to the crime. His DNA matched what was on file. Remember, none of the children’s DNA matched what was on the crime scene. Guilty anyways.
Yusef Salaam was released March 1997.
Kevin Richardson was released June 1997.
Antron McCray was released September 1997.
Raymond Santana was released December 1995.
All of the boys were released by the time the true confession had come out, and Korey was finally released.

They were children when this unjust system pinned crimes on them. They were children when Donald Trump used his platform and money to endorse the death penalty of these children (now men). Trump also refused to apologize in 2019 for doing so EVEN THOUGH the boys were INNOCENT.
Trump spent money and put out full page ads in the newspapers calling for the death penalty, ON CHILDREN. He did interviews stating “of course I hate these people and we should all hate these people. Maybe hate is what we need if we’re going to get something done”
Spoiler: this is a main reason I can not and will not ever support the death penalty. Think of the 5 children who would be DEAD for a crime they didn’t commit. Y’all think I trust this country to pick and choose who dies? As much as America likes to think so, they’re not God.
Fast forward 31 years... trump is elected president and Korey is STILL fighting for freedom, for change, for justice and for his life. The past and present of the stories of these kids haunts me often. Because it should. #BlackLivesMatter
