A thread of my experience marching around New York City, the city I love, with the #BlacklivesMaters #NewYorkProtests
First came across the protestors during my daily bike ride along the Hudson River park
Poignant words from one of the young men who organized this protest. He said they started with 300 people organized in harlem. By the time they hit Washington square park, they were leading thousands
“Hands up, don’t shoot!” just outside of the precinct on East 5th street
Appropriate NYC protest jams
Changes
Support from residents in every neighborhood we marched through
Favorite moment of the day. Two groups of protestors came together as one. The amount of love and joy was overwhelming. A young black protestor saw me taking in this moment, and gave me a hug. All I muttered was yeaaa. Wish I had this moment back to say I was marching for her
When the protest arrived downtown, things got ugly. Here, NYPD tried to bottleneck protestors. After the crowds began to disperse, I rode my bike uptown
Police refusing to let protestors march at union square
Smoke and tear gas on west 14th
Outside of union square
A hostile scene after an altercation with police and protestors
Full circle. An ugly end to the day. The sunset over the Hudson gave me hope. Hope that we come together as a city, and as a country, to break the social and economic systems that got us here. It’s time to start making some changes
