IN DEPTH FIRST AID THREAD!!!!!
burns: firstly you need to asses the burn and how big it is, if it’s the larger than the size of the palm of their hand then they need hospital treatment! until you can get there you’re going to need to sterilise it if you can, do not remove any fabric that is +
attached as it may peel off skin and cause more damage! you’re going to need to cool down the temperature of the burn because it’s working it’s way deeper into the skin! if they cannot feel the bird that means it has reached the nerve endings and burned them! get them to +
a hospital asap! burns need to be run under cool, NOT ICE COLD, water for at LEAST ten minutes, twenty for a chemical burn but PLEASE make sure you know that the chemical will not react with water before you do this! if you don’t have access to running water it is possible +
to use a bucket of cool water, however this adds twenty minutes to the time so it has to be submerged for 30 minutes or 40 for a chemical burn! this is going to cool the heat of the burn and stop it from continuing to burn through the layers of skin, you also need to +
dress the burn, a good sterile dressing if you don’t have access to in date sterile bandages is cling film/cling wrap! peel away the first layer because that isn’t sterile, you may want to peel away a couple to be safe but under that +
it is sterile! wrap this around the burn the way you would a tattoo, this is going to prevent infection! again get to a hospital asap for burns that need treatment, do NOT apply any lotions of any sorts!!!
external bleeding: a general rule for this is that if it’s bleeding heavily, it needs to be stopped or slowed, apply pressure to the wound, if there is an object sticking out do NOT remove it!! you can still apply pressure and bandage without dislodging the object!!! all you +
have to do is place CLEAN AND STERILE bandages either side of the object, then you wrap another over them in a figure eight motion either side of the object, if the bleeding soaks through the bandages you but another over it in a figure 8, of this one soaks through then +
you need to remove the bandages and re dress, elevate where possible. if it’s a wound from a gunshot, you can use a tampon to stop bleeding ONLY if you have nothing else because they are not sterile and can cause infection, however in times of emergency, the wound takes +
priority over infection! get them to a hospital as quickly as possible! also please please treat them for shock! look for signs, pale, clammy and cold skin, short rapid breathing, coach their breathing, get them to breath with you, cover them with foil blankets or +
normal blankets if you don’t have foil ones to warm them!

breakages: if a bone is suspected to be broken, fractured or dislocated and has NOT broken the skin, there’s little you can do other than treat for shock and keep the person calm, however you can ask their +
permission to apply a sling for their arm if it is their arm affected, i’ve included a pdf on how to apply a sling because it’s easier to show than to explain but just know that the longest side goes up the arm with the widest angled corner pointing at the elbow! if the +
skin IS broken and a bone is sticking out, follow the same instructions i have above in this thread to treat wounds with objects sticking out to bandage it but ONLY if they let you touch them, get them to a hospital ASAP and keep them calm! +
any suspected injury to the spine:

immediately lay on your stomach at their head and hold it in neutral alignment, meaning the nose is in line with the centre of the body all the way to the feet, if they are stood up, do NOT sit them down! instead position yourself +
in front of them and hold the sides of their head and keep it in neutral alignment that way! after this all you can do is call the emergency services, explain you have a suspected spinal injusry and talk to the casualty until the medical team arrives but +
make sure only the person directly in front of their face is talking to them and keeping them calm! otherwise they may turn their head!

recovery position: the recovery position is applied to a casualty that has fallen unconscious and is breathing, not a +
fainted casualty though! for a faint you lay them down and raise the legs above heart level, for example by putting their legs on a chair. if the casualty has been knocked out or fallen unconscious due to any other reason, maybe shock, if they are still breathing you apply +
the recovery position, to do this you take the hand closest to you and put it at a right angle next to their head, like they are about to wave to someone, then you take the hand furthest away from you and press the back of it to the cheek closest to you, keep your palm +
on their palm at ALL TIMES, next lift the knee furthest from you so it bends and use this to rotate them toward you and onto their side, ensure their shoulder is fully rotated and their knee is bent! then lift their chin to open the airway, check their breathing +
by putting your ear to their mouth and watching for the rise and fall of the chest, check their pulse, call emergency services, tell them you have an unconscious casualty that is breathing, after thirty minutes on one side you have to rotate the recovery position to +
the other side! follow the same steps but from the other side of them! +
CPR: in the extremely unfortunate event that you check your casualties breathing and they are not breathing, for an adult you start with compressions unless it’s respiratory related, 30 compressions to 2 breaths, the compression is 5-6cm deep, place the heel of your hand +
onto the centre of the chest where indicated in the picture, place the other over the top and interlock, you’re aiming to get 120 compressions a minute, do not stop if you damage a rib! be cautious and try not to but a broken rib is nothing compared to not breathing! for the +
breaths, PINCH THE NOSE! use a pocket mask if you can to create a barrier, breathable fabric can also work, tilt the head back to open the airway and create a seal over their mouth with yours, then blow into their mouth and turn your head to look at their chest to see +
