Be media competent. LA is not “on fire.” A few buildings are on fire. The streets outside a few hot zones (in areas crossing class & racial lines) are quiet. People r home. Maybe 200 out of a city of millions causing trouble at the moment. TV finds the chaos, not the calm.
People were hurt today. Some stores were damaged or destroyed. LAPD on a citywide tactical alert, TV is wall-to-wall, LAFD is bravely working. The city might seem out of control if you’re watching on TV. It is not. We are afraid and wary. Wondering about tomorrow.
Not minimiing the nationwide scale, or the anger, or the information chaos - or the gaslighting. But LA is not on fire tonight. It’s tense. Scary things happened. That’s enough.
