As a long-time resident of North Central Calgary I wanted to emphasize our long history of pedestrian indifference. This is going to be a bit of a rant... #yyccc #yyc4transit #GreenLineYYC (1/11)
In 2005 I was attending, what is now, Ambrose University at their downtown campus. At the time I lived in the Panorama area and took the “express” bus downtown. It wasn’t long before I realized that my classmate Jackie Ho also road the same bus. (2/11)
Jackie and I were in the same business program at Ambrose. Since the class sizes were small we had many courses and projects together. (3/11)
Until one fateful morning where Jackie was not on the “express” bus with me. He had been hit by a vehicle while crossing Country Hills Blvd. in a Pedestrian Crosswalk. (4/11)
They finally did put up some traffic lights after that. It seems like our North Central Calgary pedestrian strategy has always been reactive. There is not enough effort going into a proactive pedestrian strategy. (5/11)
Since Jackie’s death I am very cognizant of our 4-lane mini-highways through our north central communities. There are still more “lights-less” crosswalks scattered throughout just waiting for trouble. (6/11)
Just last year I found myself getting rear ended at one of these “mini-highway” trouble spots. I had stopped at one of these “light-less” crosswalks for a mother and daughter on their way to school. The guy behind me did not see the pedestrians. Car was totaled. (7/11)
The reason North Central Calgary has these behemoth “mini-highways” is because personal vehicles are the only way we can get anywhere. It’s time for this to change! We need to shift our thinking to make North Central Calgary more Pedestrian Friendly. (8/11)
North Central Calgary need less vehicles on the roads and more efficient transit options. This proactive pedestrian friendly strategy MUST result in LRT to North Pointe. I know it isn’t going to happen in Stage 1... but it will never happen if Stage 1 doesn’t begin. (9/11)
Sadly, I fear there may be more pedestrian fatalities in North Central Calgary due to the volume of vehicles moving around, but hopefully we can see more pedestrian friendly neighborhoods evolve with the progress of #GreenLineYYC (10/11)
