Just got home from the Fairfax protests. The official @BLMLA protest and march started at Pan Pacific Park at noon. Then around 1/1:15pm the March began west on 3rd where it ENDED on Fairfax & 3rd at around 2pm.
During the official BLM march, activists called for justice for those killed by police, for defunding the LAPD, and replacing DA Jackie Lacey.
I want to be clear that the protests that happened after 2pm were not part of the official BLMLA actions. I’m seeing outlets label all actions as part of the BLMLA protests and that is erroneous.
When the March ended people stayed behind on their own to protest. That’s when police vehicles were smashed and burned.
The majority of the protestors were chanting peacefully. The police formed a line on the intersection of 3rd and Eidinburgh but protestors had them surrounded on both sides of the street.
Many protestors chanted “white people to the front,” asking white allies to put their bodies on the frontlines in solidarity.
Meanwhile, behind the police line on 3rd (where the other protestors were) several cop cars were smashed and eventually burned. Cops behind the line shot rubber bullets into the crowd of mostly peaceful protestors several times sending protestors running, but most came back.
Back on 3rd and Edinburgh the protestors inched closer to the police chanting “no justice, no peace” and “George Floyd, say his name.”
Meanwhile, there were several factions of protestors in the area. On Beverly and Edinburgh a cop car was burning.
Back on Fairfax and 3rd at 4pm people continue to gather. At this point the police have more reinforcements. Things are relatively calm until a car at the intersection turns right onto 3rd and speeds into a crowd of protestors. People chase after it. Looks like no one is hurt.
But as the protestors chase the car that speeded through the crowd, you can hear rubber bullets being shot once again.
Eventually a protestor with a megaphone calls for everyone to march down Fairfax towards Beverly. Police are at that intersection and again fire rubber bullets at the crowd sending them running.
Most make their way back only to be shot at again. A rubber bullet whizzes by my partner just barely missing his head.
We left at 5pm and the protests continue.
