Well I just learned that Minneapolis is still in the middle of negotiating its police union contract. The contract that helps fired officers get reinstated and that has these sections in it about officers who shoot people.
In fact, if I’m reading this contract correctly, it looks like the officers who were fired for killing #GeorgeFloyd will probably get their jobs back because they didn’t get at least 3 days of paid administrative leave (I think?) as required by the contract. See how this works?
So the city has to either fire them right away and risk them getting reinstated or wait 3 days and piss off the entire country. Locked into a contract with the police union.
Why did they agree to those terms in the first place? Did ANYBODY on the city council consider the consequences of adding this language to the contract? The police already rigged it, in a contract they negotiated behind the scenes and then posted online, hiding in plain sight.
FYI “critical incidents” which the contract requires officers get 3-7 days paid leave for, include all police shootings PLUS any other incident where the police kill someone. So that would include the killing of George Floyd.
So the city council approved a contract with the police union (which they probably didn’t even read) that gave special benefits specifically to officers who kill people and now the officers who killed George Floyd have a good chance of getting reinstated PLUS back pay?
And so if the officers don’t all go to jail, they might end up going right back into policing communities Iike nothing even happened. Like his death didn’t even matter. I’m furious. Abolish the police unions.
