My statement:

1/ #GeorgeFloyd’s murder at the hands of police is both horrific & another reminder of the systemic racism in our criminal justice system — racism that directly leads to the death of many black ppl. We must continue to fight for structural reform of a broken system

2/ I send my full support to those peacefully and forcefully fighting for justice on our streets. Even in this painful moment, you show us that a better world is possible & that change only happens when you demand it.

3/ I’ll continue to use my platform as Senator to advocate for aggressive criminal justice reform & police accountability. I’ll also continue to stand in solidarity with my colleagues in the California Legislative Black Caucus, as the Black Caucus leads on these critical issues.

4/ Tragically, racism & white supremacy are in our nation’s DNA, alongside the revolutionary ideals that created the U.S. We must support efforts to end the criminalization & killing of black people. One life taken is too many. Enough is enough. Now, as always, #BlackLivesMatter .
