In 2020, some Bahamians are in denial of racism, classism, colorism & xenophobia despite examples in their personal lives, along with their peers.

“BuT I hAVent EXpeRiencED-“

You have.

You’re just conditioned to:
—not see it
—not question it

Maybe because you benefit from it
While you may feel these problems don’t exist due to your personal experiences, question your own upbringing and culture

Perhaps, the severity of issues seem pale in comparison to other countries because there’s more tactful separation amongst our islands to keep you unaware.
I’ll speak what I know & studied on New Providence, our beloved, yet segregated island.

Let’s be clear on understandings, stereotypes based upon reality.

Before you respond, if you choose to do so, read this thread a few times to gain some clarity and think critically.
RACISM

You may argue black people are the majority.

You are correct.

So answer this question to yourself, or reply

Can racism exist when you are not the majority?

If yes, give your examples.

If no, prove your statement.

Let’s check our privileges as we answer as well.
CLASSISM

This one should be a lot easier to detect than perhaps racism

Why?

Well, while you may have argued being the black majority allegedly negates racism in The Bahamas, this one is based on social class.

E.g
Have you been belittled due to what you make, where you live?
COLORISM

The irony in this example is that in New Providence, this is

Black & White

Our conditioning unbeknownst to us positioned lighter skin as more valuable

You see it displayed by:
—our mannerisms
—our servitude
—our actions
—our lust

Preferences can be swayed by color
XENOPHOBIA

Now if you can’t see how we’re the pot calling the kettle black on this issue, you more than likely are out of here touch.

People from other countries are discriminated against by Bahamians, simply due to the country they are from, or migrated from.
I can tweet experiences from each, but that’s a lot of examples.

The easiest way to know if many issues exist is by putting yourself in the shoes of the other person/group

Would you think that is fair legally, morally, ethically, to treat you like your worth less ?
Beyond the scope of problems existing in The Bahamas 🇧🇸, there are Bahamians living in the 🇺🇸 as well.

There are relationships our countries have that impact our day to day lives.

Try to be more compassionate when there’s issues that affect people due to the color of their skin
Understand that only due to the segregation within The Bahamas, many times the issues of racism, classism, colorism, and xenophobia cannot be openly displayed.

However, it doesn’t denounce the existence of these problems altogether.

I think there’s room to grow in our country
I pray for fair treatment, equal opportunities and more development as we deal with these issues as they come and pray for family, friends of Bahamians in US protesting, along with all black people who deserve justice in their country.

I hope this was a well delivered 🧵
