Whilst I'm happy that so many people are pledging to be anti-racist and active allies of black people - I really want to stress something.

This is despite the fact that George Floyd is not the first, and certainly not the last victim of anti-black racism. The black community, *my community*, has been in mourning, in pain and shouting about this for centuries, only to be ignored, made to feel crazy (2)
and purposefully misunderstood and demonised.
Please do not be surprised at the fact that poor mental health is rife in the black community. Do not be surprised that we carry trauma and hurt from past generations. Do not be surprised that despite the 'progress' that (3)

has been made, we are still victims of the same racism that our ancestors experienced. (4)
I mean it when I say, thank you, for the pledges of allyship and action - but remember that as much as you want to share/shout/march with us, please make sure you take time to understand us, our experiences, our reality, our diversity and intersections. (5)
Last thing - BAME is widely used to homogenise the experiences of victims of racism. Please stop.
