[🚨THREAD🚨] There seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation making the rounds online regarding Regis Korchinski-Paquet — so here's a thread on what transpired in front of the public in chronological order. #RegisKorchinski #regiskorchinskipaquet
On Wednesday, just after 5 pm, Regis Korchinski-Paquet fell to her death from a 24th floor balcony. Family members took to social media, claiming that she was ‘thrown’ or ‘shoved’ by police. #regisKorchinskiPaquet
SIU said police were called to the unit that day to deal with a “domestic incident,” but Regis' family told media that it was also a mental health call because Regis has epilepsy, violent seizures and wanted Regis to be taken to CAMH. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
Regis' mother said they have called police many times to help calm her when she's having a violent seizure, but never have '8 police officers' responded before. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
Regis' family's lawyer told me Thursday that there was a fight between Regis and her brother, Reese — and that Regis had had a seizure before that. There were concerns that it would flare up again due to her fight with Reese. He confirms there was a family conflict.
The family says Regis, her brother (Reese) and her mother were in the hallway when police arrived and Regis said she wanted to go inside to use the bathroom. Reese said he then saw multiple police officers go into the unit — after Regis went back inside. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
Family says then Reese tried to go in after his sister and was stopped by police officers. After 1-2 minutes, the family heard 'commotion' in the apartment and then heard Regis cry out 'mom, help! mom, help" and then heard silence. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
Family lawyer: Police then went back out of unit and told family that Regis was either in neighbour's unit or unit below. The mother then asked if her daughter is on the ground, the officer went back into the unit, came back out and confirmed Regis was on the ground.
On Friday, Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders held a press conference, wanting to clarify some of the events after hearing what he called 'toxic misinformation' and 'outrageous lies.’ #Regiskorchinskipaquet
Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said there were 3 calls to service for police to attend the building, two of them were related to concerns of weapons or knives and one was concerning assault, which is why there were multiple officers responding. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
Toronto police also said none of the officers involved were wearing body cams and Saunders said this would be a prime example of why body cams are needed and would shed light on what happened. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
SIU said Friday that it had interviewed four officers in relation to the incident that resulted in Regis' death and it was interviewing a fifth officer that day. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
The family's lawyer then responded to Saunders in a press release, saying that there was no knife or assault taking place when police arrived to the unit. But doesn’t say anything on whether that was the case before police arrived. #RegisKorchinskiPaquet
The family's lawyer added, moving forward, family would no longer be referring to police 'shoving' Regis from balcony and instead are waiting for investigation results. The family said it is not backtracking, they still have "beliefs they hold to be true." #RegisKorchinski
On Saturday, thousands of people attended a march in support of #RegisKorchinskiPaquet, asking for answers on what transpired between police and Regis before she died. #JusticeForRegis
