Back in downtown Detroit covering the protests at DPD Headquarters.
A much smaller group out here today at DPD headquarters at Third and Michigan Avenue. Few dozen. I’m guessing the protest was supposed to start at four. People are just standing around with signs, talking. Like yesterday, a mixture of Black and white people here.
The protesters have began their march, up Michigan Avenue headed toward Corktown — much like yesterday. I’d estimate a few hundred out here.
This guy just spray painted “No justice, no peace” on the new apartments called “The Corner” at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Trumbull. Former site of Tiger Stadium.
He wasn’t finished. Sprayed George Floyd’s name on a window a few feet down.
There rally has crossed Roosevelt Park in Corktown and is now circling the old train station.
We have crossed into Mexicantown on West Vernor. Not sure how long this route will go.
After walking through the neighborhoods of Mexicantown and Southwest Detroit, the protesters are now headed back up West Vernor to Corktown and presumably back to DPD headquarters. Been walking for two hours.
Protesters walking under the bridge connected to the old train station in Detroit’a Corktown.
“Hands up. Don’t shoot.”
Two groups of protesters have not met up on Michigan Avenue and Rosa Parks Blvd. Couple hundred strong now.
Protesters have met back up at DPD headquarters and are kneeling for a moment of silence for #GeorgeFloyd. DPD has met them with riot gear on...
DPD in riot gear..:
DPD out here dressed like Robo Cop in all that gear. A few of them have it on.
Reenforcements have arrived for DPD.
The organizers of the protest ended up but several people refuse to leave. It’s a standoff here at DPD headquarters.
Protesters are walking south down Michigan to Campus Martius pass the Book Cadillac. (I still call it that)
We back. Protesters hit Hart Plaza area then actually got on I-375, came through Greektown and are now heading back down Michigan Avenue...
The earlier crowd was really protesting. A lot of young kids down here now playing and running. Crowd is definitely rowdier.
Protesters have gathered in arms around the Joe Louis Fist in Detroit on Jefferson Avenue. They have blocked the street and all.
They have turned the lights on their phones with a 90-second moment of silence for the “brothers and sisters” have died by the hands of the police. The guy on the speaker said “get on Facebook and tell everyone to get to Detroit right now. Said they want to “shut it down.”
They are literally sitting on the Joe Louis Fist. Someone in the crowd just yelled “we need to kill some cops.”
Protesters surrounded a DPD car on Griswold. Headed toward the Business District.
HERE COMES DPD! Crowed getting more excited. Definitely looking for trouble.
Kids screaming “Fuck 12” on this car riding up Griswold.
GUY LEADING THE PROTESTERS SAID “WE ARE HEADED TO THE POLICE STATION.” And they are.
Back at DPD headquarters. Just two hours ago, the protesters had a standoff with the police. They have blocked the entrance. They are tossing water bottles at DPD!!
I am behind DPD lines right now with the rest of the media.
DPD just told the protesters to leave or face the consequences: tear gas.
And it has started. DPD is arresting people for unlawful assembly.
They are throwing fire crackers at us and DPD!
DPD just pulled up and started firing tear gas. Burning that hell out of my eyes.
DPD has arrested dozens of people and placed them on a DDOT bus. They appear to be young.
I can’t get close enough anymore to see what is going on. Tear gas is strong! Cleared the place. People have either left or are on the bus in cuffs. In front of Detroit Police Department on Third and Michigan.
Protesters left have been pushed back to Third and Bagley in front of MGM Casino and are lighting firecrackers. Smell of tear gas is strong and DPD is releasing more into the air.
Tear gas stingers DPD is using. Must be dozens of them on the ground.
DPD is just letting the tear gas fly now. Pushing the people back on Third to I75. Stuff is nasty and fast. I can’t even get over Michigan Avenue it’s so strong.
Scene in front of MGM Casino. More tear gas from DPD and the protesters are throwing glass an other projectiles. You can hear it breaking on the ground.
A bunch of protesters tried to get away by running down the tunnel of MGM Casino’s parking garage. DPD went and got them.
DPD just pushed all the protesters out of downtown Detroit and are sealing off the perimeter. Grand River is the next street over. I can see Cass Tech. Must be dozens of arrests. Hundreds of cops.
Protesters that are left aare by the Rosa Parks Transit Center now.
This is nothing but a big party down here near Campus Martius. Cars going the wrong way. Saying let’s go to the Nike Store.
The crowd is headed north on Woodward Avenue past the Nike store. Can’t even call them protesters anymore.
The crowd has surrounded the Nike store. They keep talking about going in but DPD has pulled up.
Nike store on Woodward Avenue is safe for now...
DPD has tired tear gas again on Woodward and Grand Circus. Everyone is running. Tear gas hurts. Trying not to run because I blend in too well with the crowd (lol seriously) but the gas is too strong. In front of the UA store with my @freep team.
Was just approached by a cop firing rubber bullets and told to leave. He thought I was a part of the crowd. @freep team was right there to vouch for me and I showed my press credential. They then fired some tear gas at us and we had to run.
We are on the corner of Griswold and Michigan Avenue. Police sealing the area up the Avenue. The crowd just won’t leave. They’ve been hit with rubber bullets, tear gas and arrested. This has become a game to them now. No longer protesting.
Bystanders keep coming by the media and talking trash to DPD. They fired more rubber bullets and tear gas hitting us. A guy got hit and is crying. This is what that rubber bullet will do you your back. GO HOME!!! This is not a show or protest anymore.
I’m literally staying by @elrick and @reporterdavidj because I blend in too much with the crowd and I don’t want to run and get arrested. I’ve already been approached a few times. People keep gathering here and antagonizing the Detroit police. They are firing gas and pellets.
Detroit @freep FB live video of the Detroit Police approaching me with a gun loaded with rubber bullets telling me to leave. I blended in too well with the crowd. Had to stand near my white colleagues all night because I didn’t want to run when the tear gas came and get arrested.
