Today’s car protest has reached Penn/North. This woman is playing drums in the bed of a truck.
Another car in the car parade protest. Helicopters overhead, police mobile command is outside the library.
Some demonstrators are coming through on foot, as well.
It’s been a sold half hour of protest cars driving through Penn North.
Still going at Penn North.
Demba Gologo beats an empty water jug and encourages a car caravan of protesters outside his shop on North Avenue.
There were some protesters on foot for awhile at City Hall, but that kind of broke up.
Apparently there have been reports of car fire(s)? in downtown Baltimore. I was at City Hall and walked to the harbor and I’ve seen no evidence of such. It’s a lovely evening with people walking, riding bikes. Most wearing masks.
Marchers arriving at City Hall.
This man with his arms out seems to be trying to get officers to talk to the demonstrators. The officers are not responding.
Scene at Baltimore City Hall. “Hey hey, ho ho! Racist cops have got to go!”
“George Floyd! Say his name!”
“George Floyd! Freddie Gray!”
Looks like the car parade (which started in the 3 o’clock hour!) made it to City Hall.
Outside police headquarters, a crowd is chanting the names of victims of police brutality.
And just like that, this crowd — at least hundreds, definitely — is in the move eastward.
People crowding HQ
People are shouting “hands up, don’t shoot!” This is just outside the entrance to Baltimore Police HQ.
More police HQ
Protesters got a lieutenant to read the names of police brutality victims.
Light applause as a male demonstrator convinced a female officer to give him a hug.
As demonstrators prepare to move on from police HQ, a few shake hands with the officers. The lieutenant who read the names was Lt. Peter Heron. He encouraged protesters to be safe.
Some protesters remain at police headquarters, while I’m following a group headed south down President Street.
Protesters block President/Lombard for a bit before moving on.
This motorist agrees with the protesters.
Harbor East drivers are on board. Holy heck, it’s so loud with all of these cars honking their horns. Some drivers have fists raised or are filming.
Protestors loudly chanting names outside the Loch Bar in Harbor East, whew people are having dinner.
I don’t think Loch Bar’s tables are all six feet apart.
Crowd is amped up, outside the Four Seasons Hotel. For those who don’t know Baltimore, this is Harbor East, one of the poshest developments in our city.
“Power to the people!” Outside the Four Seasons. And the group is on the move again.
Demonstrators are now outside the Charleston, probably the most expensive restaurant in Baltimore. Definitely one of the fanciest. (Twitter, correct me if I’m wrong.)
Some diners are going inside. Others are watching the protest. One dining couple shook hands with a demonstrator. A lady in full covering (like a burka?) is telling fellow demonstrators not to engage with the diners, and to avoid trouble.
“We’re here. They see us,” she says. No need to interrupt their dinner.
Caught back up with protesters, now in Fells Point.
. @fotoj at work!
There’s some ... not sure what’s going on here ... words exchanged? Crowd chants: “Stay focused! Stay focused!” This is in Fells Point.
This is dicey.
Foxtrot is overhead but there are almost no police that I can see, as there are verbal altercations and beverages thrown in Fells Point.
On the move in Fells.
Fells point.
By the way, I should note that @ElectPastorWest appears to be the one leading the way.
Diners at Bar Vasquez applauded as the protesters passed by.
Protest is wrapping up. @ElectPastorWest says last night, protesters demanded to talk to the commissioner. That led to a 1.5-hr meeting today. Says that resulted in the officer who punched the woman being fired. (*we were only told he was pulled from the street, I believe)
. @ElectPastorWest says the police commissioner promised to meet with protesters but did not.
Next protest is Monday at 8:30 am at City Hall. They want “this incompetent mayor” to sit down with protesters, @ElectPastorWest says.
Group now heading down Pratt. Foxtrot overhead.
Back at Baltimore City Hall.
Can’t tell how large the crowd is at Baltimore City Hall. I’m at the front. There’s disorganized yelling at the police officers who are standing in front of City Hall.
Police van was just vandalized in front of me outside City Hall.
City Hall
Foxtrot buzzing low overhead. Police have shields.
