I've gotten into a lot of fights under ignorant tweet replies about how "systematic racism is a myth" or "there are no laws that directly oppress black people", so I decided to make a thread on the major tactics used to oppress black people in America
Gentrification:
This tactic is one of the most common and deceiving ones; It is disguised as a renovation for a low-income neighborhood.
They begin by fixing various streets, and then slowly, landlords begin to buy cheap streets in bulks in order to begin their process.
They start by making “modern” apartment complexes and homes, and since these residences are new, they are able to increase the price of rent as a means of meeting their own costs of production.
Suddenly, these new highrise apartments catch the eye of both big chain companies and start-up businesses. These can range from a new local coffee shop to a Target.
Inch by inch, they begin to take over the neighborhood, and soon enough, rent prices are so high that the low-income residents have no choice but to relocate to, yet again, another broken community.
The low-income resident is forced to start over until the process is repeated again.
It is important that we go to Town Hall meetings that are where they discuss what will be put into your neighborhoods. Sometimes It takes one person to express concern and they will deny their building permits, We just have to show up.
That being said, gentrification can also be used to destroy a community. When you look at low-income communities, you will notice patterns in the type of stores that surround them.
Liquor stores are in every corner and the most abundant food source is from Fast Food restaurants.
They use these as leverage for why the neighborhoods need “renovation” despite being systematically placed there in order to destroy from the inside.
You can easily spot these neighborhoods and distinguish them. The gentrified one will have newly paved roads with smooth sidewalks and new stop lights.
Additionally, you will see new local businesses that rip off the old ones that once stood there, elote carts become “Sarah’s Corn Delicacies” and liquor stores become juice bars.
However, the low-income neighborhood will have broken streets with lazy repairs, homes with faulty foundations, and more racial diversity.
Now, what are the effects of gentrification? Well, there is a lot. Some of the most prominent are the complete loss of everything; some people end up homeless, and the homeless are kicked by the residents of the new neighborhood
Gentrification is also one of the prime reasons as to how gangs and violence begin; this is because gangs begin to fight for the "best" territories to control. The lack of jobs and income opportunities creates an environment that is a survival of the fittest.
This is only one of the systems in place that propagates the oppression of black people. All of the systems are connected and while it seems as if the Jim Crow era was over; It isn't it was just redefined
I'll keep adding to this thread; I just thought if you encounter any ignorant that denies systematic oppression, you can show them this. #BlackLivesMatter
