History Lesson: The summer of 1967 was one of the most tumultuous in American history. Violent race riots took place in Detroit, Boston, Atlanta and New York.

As governor, @MittRomney’s father oversaw first race riot in Detroit. 16 citizens were killed by police and military.
2/ Civil unrest got even worse in 1969 with the assasination of Martin Luther King. Many historians feel this was the hardest year in American history.

This is the part you probably don’t know.

There’s a famous report that came in the aftermath, the Kerner Commission Report.
3/ If you read this report, it’s literally describing the same structural racism we see today, just a different day.

The Kerner Comission had its harshest words for media, pointing out that it delivered news through a white lens and acted like the black community didn’t exist.
4/ So what happened with the Kerner Commission report?

Nothing. Like the Muller report, Americans were told to wait - experts were coming with answers.

By 1969, Lyndon Johnson had signed the Civil Rights Act and decided further efforts to curb police violence were too much.
5/ You know that episode of Breaking Bad where Mike tells Walter White, “No more half measures?” The 1964 Civil Rights Act was a half measure. And that incomplete solution is why we’re in this hell today.

We need to treat America’s original wound of slavery so we can all heal.
