This is going to be a thread. I’ve got some things to say and the stick to sports crowd isn’t going to like it. That’s fine. I get to say what I want to say, so do you. It’s kind of what this whole country is about. For a long time I haven’t said things here.
But the last few days have really made me realize this: Saying nothing feels TO ME (doesn’t have to feel that way to you) like some sort of silent approval. And I don’t see how anyone would say they approve of what’s happened in this country the last few days (and much longer)
This isn’t about a political party or an individual. This is about being a human being on planet earth. The idea that all people should be treated equally sounds great. And we love to say it. But we sure as hell don’t do it. Never have and still don’t.
I don’t pretend to know what it’s like to be black in this country. I’m white and I grew up in one of the whitest counties in a state in the middle of the country in a middle class family. I can’t identify with what it’s like to be profiled and discriminated against. Not at all.
So I can’t say I know what it’s like for a black person in America and I never will know what it’s like. But I don’t have to know what it’s like to stand up and say what we’re doing and have done for a long time isn’t right. Not just cops, but all of us should strive to be better
Me tweeting takes no great strength or courage. And it probably won’t make a lick of difference. But I know that staying silent doesn’t do any good. Maybe if enough people talk loud enough things will start to change. Maybe we will start to treat each other better.
And if that happens, that’s the goal. If everybody said “one person can’t make a difference” then nobody would do anything and we’d make no progress. I’d like to think we’ve made a lot in the first 244 years of this country. And I damn sure know we need to make a lot more.
So look I’m still gonna tweet a lot about Mizzou sports. That’s why I have a job and that’s the only reason the vast majority of people who follow me here (there’s way too many of you BTW) do so. But I’m going to tweet about some other things going forward too.
You’re welcome not to like that. You’re welcome to tell me you don’t like it. You’re welcome to unfollow me and if we’re being honest if my opinions or my voicing them makes you want to not be a consumer of my business, that’s your right too. Maybe I shouldn’t say that, but...
I’ve shut up out of fear of alienating people for a long time. One thing anybody that knows me will tell you is I don’t really care if you like me or agree with me. So I’ll say what I think and deal with consequences because I’ve reached the point I feel that’s important. /thread
