several people have already brought attention to this issue but i'd still like to talk about it too. 10 million congolese people died during leopold II's colonial reign over their country. he is a mass murderer.
tw: violence & slavery
he forced these people to work for him and did gruesome things to them and their family if they didnt obey him. he cut off their hands, took their families hostage and deported people to labor camps. any riot or upstanding against him was brutally shut down
because of his actions belgian colonialism got worse and worse and people were forcibly being taken away from their homes and brought to belgium, where they had to live in human zoos so people could go look at them. this was at the world expo in 1958.
he pillaged, plundered and stole from the congolese just so he could have artifacts to put in his "africa museum", that still exists to this day.
he basically caused a genocide and turned the lives of so many congolese people into a living hell. the things he did to them are considered some of the most gruesome things ever done to people.
and YET we still have statues in his "honor" and have streets named after him. the museum he built with the things he stole from congo is still open to the public today. this is unacceptable.
so dont come at me saying "oh racism isnt bad in europe" or "black lives matter is only an american thing".
NO. this is a global issue. as long as people still think its okay to honor people who committed such atrocities this will remain to be a serious issue.
#BlackLivesMatter is so important. not just in america, but in the world. educate yourself on these topics, call out people and actively work towards a change. #BLMBelgium
